Remember the Treehouse of Horror 25 title sequence?

The 2013 show proved to be quite a spectacle. But will 2014 try to top it, or go another way?

This year they open on some planet and the big show there. They begin announcing an array of stars that will be appearing. They also start playing the classic Tonight Show music. Is that still being used? If not, when was the last time it was used since the days of Johnny Carson?

We then get a variety of shots from various Treehouse of Horrors over the years. It is a nice call back to many of the stories that they told. I actually am blanking on some of them. Makes for a good excuse to go and enjoy them this weekend.

But with these flashes of shows past and the old Tonight Show music, this all feels so out of place. What are they going for? It isn't spooky, or that nostalgic. It's just cute in a vague way. Mostly I just want to go watch older Treehouse of Horrors.

It reminds me of when I watch old SCTV. They had a reoccurring bit in the show that centered on a talk show. I know they were referencing The Merv Griffin Show, but I have no memory of the actual show. So the joke of the sketch is always flat for me.

This is a reference to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. And that's the sum of the humor. Is it supposed to be funny?

We then get our title. It's made of the bodies of various celebrities.

Then Jerry Lewis, I guess, says his catchphrase, and has his head zapped off...

That's it. That's their title sequence for 2014. That's the 25th opening.

This honestly feels so lazy. Was last year's opening so big that they decided not to even bother? They have done some simple and short opening before, but this one is just so halfhearted. It's sad.

I mean we've even the bodies making up the title has been done before, and far better. Remember Marge cutting up and cooking the FOX lineup for interrupting her opening monologue?

It's like they wanted to make it clear they weren't going to bother. They could have just skipped the opening and used it to segway into the first story! I hate these disappointing openings.

The only way to get the feel of this opening out of our heads is to look at just a little bit more at the stories we got this year.
